East Coast to West Coast Road Trip

Embark on an epic road trip from Orlando to South Lake Tahoe with our helpful itinerary and dog-friendly travel tips. Discover unforgettable attractions, hotels, restaurants and more.

1 Week. 5 Overnight Stops. Unforgettable Experiences. Let’s get started!

We had one week to drive all the way from sunny Orlando, Florida, to the picturesque South Lake Tahoe, California, covering a distance of 2,923 miles. Can you say…road trip? That's a whopping 43 hours of driving time, but we were determined to make the most of it! We wanted to soak in each city's culture and attractions while keeping the trip short and sweet. We had our fur baby Marshmallow with us to make things even more exciting! So, don't worry. We've got some dog-friendly travel recommendations to share as well. Let's get started!

Road Trip Itinerary

Here's a quick rundown of our road trip itinerary and the places we stayed overnight. I'll be publishing a new blog post for each city every week. Each blog post will have hotels, restaurants, attractions, and dog-friendly tips!

Our itinerary included the following destinations:

- Orlando, FL

~9 hours

- New Orleans, LA - 2 nights

~8.5 hours

- San Antonio, TX - 1 night

~8 hours

- El Paso, TX - 1 night

~6.5 hours

- Scottsdale, AZ - 1 night

~5 hours

- Las Vegas, NV - 1 night

~7.5 hours

- South Lake Tahoe, CA

We definitely had a packed itinerary, with some pretty long driving stretches of 5-9 hours between each overnight stop. If we had more time to get to South Lake Tahoe, we would have loved to add an extra night in Scottsdale. Driving over eight hours on consecutive days was tiring, and Scottsdale was definitely one of our favorite cities on the trip. Thanks for checking out our adventure!

Road Trip Tip

We had quite the adventure planning our trip to South Lake Tahoe! We looked into all sorts of options, from shipping our car and flying to driving and hiring a pet transportation service for our pup, Marshmallow. But, after crunching the numbers, we decided to go with the most budget-friendly option - hitting the road ourselves with Marshmallow in tow!

Happy travels!
